With a deep grieve and sorrow we inform you that Prof. Yuri L. Sargsyan passed away on 25th of September 2024.
As we had already started to work together on organizing the MES-2025 conference, we decided to keep his name as the co-chairman on the website, as well as the co-editor of the proceedings.
In the area of kinematic synthesis of mechanisms Prof. Yuri L. Sargsyan was one of the leading scientists in the USSR and its successor countries. He became well-known internationally through his publications and participation in a series of IFToMM World Congresses (starting 1975), as well as numerous symposia and conferences (SYROM, ROMANSY, etc.). He authored more than 175 scientific publications (including 35 patents).
As a result of collaboration with Prof. Bernhard Roth (Stanford University) started in 1971, Yuri Sargsyan laid a theoretical foundation for a fundamentally new branch of kinematic geometry – the approximational kinematic geometry, which merged the classical geometry-based Burmester theory with the least-square and Chebishev’s algebraic approximations, to reproduce a given motion with no restriction on the number of positions of the rigid body specified. One of the publications on the new theory won the ASME Best Paper Award. Yuri Sargsyan’s book called Approximational Synthesis of Mechanisms published in 1982 (in Russian) was included into the mandatory list of books for PhD students in TMM in Soviet Union.
The role of Prof. Yuri L. Sargsyan in organizing, supervising and further development of MMS-related engineering education and research in Armenia can hardly be overestimated. For his significant contribution, he was elected a Member of National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, and in 1994 became its Vice President. In the years 1988-2006 Prof. Sargsyan was elected the President of the National Polytechnic University of Armenia.
Yuri Sargsyan has been actively involved in IFToMM as:
- Member of the PC on Standardization and Terminology (since 1975)
- EC Member (1992-95)
- Chair of MO Armenia (since 1998)
IFToMM awarded Prof. Yuri L. Sargsyan with Diploma in recognition of his valuable services (1995) and with Dedicated Service Award (2023).
